Five Key Scriptures

The Motivation - "Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? (Romans 2:4 - ESV)

The Vision - "His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’" (Matthew 5:21 - ESV)

The Inspiration - "If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you." (Romans 8:11 -ESV)

The Method - "...if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live." (Romans 8:13b - ESV)

The Goal - "I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." (Romans 12:1-2 - ESV)

Seven Characteristics of Your Identity in Christ

In my last free teleseminar for women, I talked about how identity in Christ overcomes codependency. In fact, staying mindful of our sure identity in Christ is foundational for both recovery and spiritual formation.

I drew my inspiration from Paul’s first letter to the Christians at Corinth. I think it’s particularly interesting that before addressing their . . . → Read More: Seven Characteristics of Your Identity in Christ

The Proper Care and Feeding of the Soul – Part 1

What is a Human Being?

I was a preemie, born six weeks early, and they tell me my first 48 hours were touch-and-go. My wife is the product of an unwanted pregnancy, born just a couple of years before Roe vs. Wade would made it legal for her birth mother to have killed her. Purposeful Pain

Suffering as proof of God’s love?

In my last two posts, I wrote about our remarkable capacity for avoiding pain, often through drugs like food, alcohol, or porn that actually make the problem worse. Progressive Pain

Advancing, yet losing ground

“Life has never been easy, but today the scope of problems that befall us is greater than ever before. Up until this last hundred years, humans were expected to deal only with their immediate environment. If they were hungry, they planted grain, went fishing, or foraged. If their children cried or . . . → Read More: Progressive Pain

Pain versus Pleasure

What’s the connection?

“All men seek happiness. This is without exception. Whatever different means they employ, they all tend to this end. The cause of some going to war, and of others avoiding it, is the same desire in both, attended with different views. The will never takes the least step but to this . . . → Read More: Pain versus Pleasure

Enjoying God More…

Recovering through Constant Friendship

If you’re like me, you don’t enjoy the mundane of recovery. But do you enjoy the God of recovery?

Last week we looked at Martha’s ‘mechanical’ approach to serving Christ and compared it to Mary’s relational approach. This week I want to examine just how Mary demonstrates her enjoyment of God, . . . → Read More: Enjoying God More…

Greater Sexual Integrity with God

One of the the most significant themes that runs throughout the Bible is that of separation. God calls his people to himself, and this requires separation from the world. He sets us apart for his glory, and we are the beneficiaries of his intimacy.

Nevertheless in every age, men and women have found that this . . . → Read More: Greater Sexual Integrity with God
